MS2 DVD Front Cover Development Task

Genre

Study the following DVD covers for recent films, read the questions and then add your answers/opinions to the comments.

• Identify the generic signifiers or icons present in each one.
• How easy is it to identify the genres of the films through looking at the covers?
• A DVD cover must attract the attention of potential consumers and so they communicate important messages about the film. How important do you think the genre of these films is as a message compared to the other considerations such as the actors, awards, the special effects, the director or suggestions about the narrative?

Having added your comments below you must then consider the design of your own DVD cover and how it will relate to comparable products within the same genre.

23 comments:

  1. DvD 1. There are army trucks and soldiers which is showing you that the army is involved, there is also an explosion and in the bottom hand corner there is a picture which is a timer. This makes you think that there is a bomb or explosive involved.
Through looking at the cover it is easy to see that the film is of the action genre.
An actor or director play an important part in getting a person to watch the film because if their not a fan of an actor then they would not want to watch a film, the same thing comes from the director because if they've directed a bad film in the past it would may be put of some people. The special effects might draw in people who are in to things such as explosions and other things like that.
DvD 2. As soon as you look at the cover you would the impression that the two people are getting married or in a relationship.
The cover hints at for this one shows the genre as being a romance or a chick flick.
The actors displayed on the cover would persuade people to think about whether they would want to see the film, the mention of any awards or rating given to the film would also make a person think about seeing the film.
DvD 3. When you look at this cover you are able to see a shot from New York, which shows you that the film is set in or based around this place.
The cover for this film doesn't really give much away about the genre.
On this DvD cover they are showing the names of the main characters in the film, this would make a person want to see the film as they would be persuaded if there favourite character is on the cast. On the cover there is also a rating which could draw more people in.
DvD 4. When looking at this cover the main icon is the two people together, in the background there is also a car which is on fire which shows you that there will be some sort of action.
Similarly to the cover for 'The Departed' it is difficult to see what the genre is, but because of the actress 'Jennifer Aniston' which gives you the idea that it may be a comedy.
Similarly to the others, the actors and the director that are in the film would be one of the factors that would encourage or make a person not want to see a film. The fact that in films like these the genre is sometimes unclear, this would also make a person either want to see the film or make them more weary about it.
DVD 6. The main icons on this DvD cover would be the Superheroes themselves as they would be well known through their appearance/costume. The icons are also visible through the background which has things like destruction and explosion, this would lead you to believe that there is action involved.
By looking at this cover it is obvious that this film is a superhero movie/action.
As in the other films, the actors and director would be a main factor in whether or not someone would want watch the film, in this film more people would want to watch the film because of the characters who are in it as they would be familiar with them from other things such as graphic novels and other films.

  2. DVD 1 – You can tell that this DVD cover is an action film because there are explosions happening in the background and the characters are wearing army outfits which show they are at war. I think this DVD cover is good for showing the genre of the film because it is self-explanatory and. I think this is good because it hasn’t relied on the actors and the reviews to sell the film. The DVD cover is good by itself.
DVD 2 – You can tell that this DVD cover is a romantic comedy because there is an image of two people who clearly in love. The main colour of the DVD cover is pink because pink has connotations of love. I think this DVD cover is quite easy to tell what genre it is just by looking at the cover because of the positioning of characters and the font which is quite friendly. The DVD cover is as important as the reviews and the actors. On the front of this cover, there are the names of the actors so the people who are fans of these people will go see the film.
DVD 3 – This DVD cover is not very successful because I did not know what genre it was until I Googled it. I think it would have been better if it had guns or something on it so that it is more clear. I don’t think it’s very easy to identify the genre of the film because there aren’t really any ways to signify the genre. I think the only reason this DVD cover is successful in making people go to see the film is because it has the names of the really famous and likeable actors which will make people interested.
DVD 4 – I think it’s easy to tell that the genre of this film is a Rom Com because it has a couple on the front and Jennifer Aniston is mainly in Rom Com films. However, I don’t think it really works because it is not flirty or romantic which is what Rom Com DVD covers usually are. Again, I think they have relied on the success of the director and the actors to sell the film rather than the DVD cover itself.
DVD 5 – I think it’s pretty obvious that this is a science fiction film because of the colour scheme and the fact that the characters are dressed like super heroes. I think its easy to identify the genre. I also think that the DVD cover itself is successful and they haven’t relied on the actors, directors and reviews to sell the DVD.

  3. The Hurt Locker- The main icon present that I can identify is the explosion at the top of the DVD Cover. This is iconic because you can see the light of the fire and the black billowing smoke that covers half of the scene being shown. Another icon is the types of transport being shown such as the army vehicles being shown. This is iconic because the colour of them and the actual form of the vehicle hints at the army being present within the film. The genre of the film in my opinion is action/war purely because the scenes that are shown on the cover hint at a lot of different events taking place and the picture of a clock at the bottom of the cover shows that there is a time limit for the plot, and also hints that it is going to be a fast paced film. Also the use of the explosions in the background and the men wearing soldier uniforms gives away the idea of a fight/war happening, so yes it is easy to identify the genre. The genre is also an important message to the customer as it will attract an audience that loves that certain genre. The actors’ names on the front are also important because it lets the audience know who stars in the film and whether they will enjoy the film based on their reputation etc. At the bottom of the cover there is a star rating that shows the audience how critics rated it on a scale of 1-5 stars. This cover has a 5 star rating which tells us that the film must be a really good film and that is a possible 'must see'. Overall the most important consumer message that the cover shows is the star rating and the genre, as the rating makes the audience want to see it and the genre would also appeal to a certain type of audience which is who it would be targeted to.

The Vow- Within this DVD Cover, the icon that stands out the most to me is the poster of both characters and the way they are positioned. It shows that they are a couple or at least going to be and that they are in love, which is shown through the facial expressions of both characters. The genre is romance/ or rom-com and you can see this through, again the facial expressions but also the colour of the background as it is bright and cheery. The film title also hints at the genre through the actual words. This is because 'THE VOW', hints at a marriage/ love/romance. The border also shows the genre through the colour, pink to highlight fairy-tale and the actual design which has little flicks which are made to look like vines to also make it look 'girly'. The words in the corner of the cover say ‘Inspired by true events’ which could also mean that the genre is true story as well. This shows that the genre is easy to find, however it could be either one or both. The genre of this particular film is vital as the cover portrays a very ‘lovey-dovey’ scenario/film sequence, so it is targeted towards a very select audience (mainly girls/women who like chick flicks). The actors names are important to because they are the main characters, which mean you, would have to like them to watch the film. However, they could be new to the film industry and never been heard of before so the names on the front would help to further their career.

  4. The Departed- Straight away, I can see Leonardo Di Caprio on the cover, which is an icon because, even though his name is on the cover, his face is very distinguishable. The only other icon that I can identify is the landscape of a bay with tall buildings, which hints at a place within the USA. I would say it is New York because of the shape of the buildings. Looking at it, the cover doesn’t really convey the genre of the film, which, in my opinion, is a good thing because it makes people curious to know what the film is about. However the colour used for the characters faces, shows that the film could be set in the past or, as I originally thought, a gangster film. The use of the buildings ties in with my gangster thought because most films of that genre have been centred around New York or America in general. The quote at the bottom of the cover tells the audience that the genre of the film is crime. This then ties in with the facial expressions of the characters, which tell you that the one on the bottom left is a detective of some sort due to the hint of clothing we can see. Overall the genre of this film is not very easy to identify if you don’t look hard enough. With this DVD cover, the genre is not the main message, but the actors are. This is shown through the well know actors names going first and the names are all in one place in a list, which draws the audience’s attention to them. The quote and the star rating are also important on this DVD cover as it shows that the film is a ‘must see’ and it gives away the genre of the film.

The Bounty Hunter- The generic icons on this DVD cover would be the main characters as they are well known /famous and are easily identifiable from their looks. The other generic icon is the fire ball in the background which hints at an explosion through the red/orange/yellow light that shows there is a fire and the smoke that it emitting from the car. Looking at the background I think that the film is an action/comedy film because the background stands out as being happy and cheerful. The background also makes the characters look slightly cartoon like, which again shows the genre is a comedy or it could suggest the age of the film through the graphics not being merged properly. Also the characters faces give it away, as in my opinion it looks like they are trying not to smile. Another factor is that the actress ‘Jennifer Anniston’ tends to star in comedy/chick flick films. However generally looking at the cover, the genre is not really reflected other than the use of the explosion and the handcuffs around the actors wrists. Again on this cover, the actors names are the most important as they convince the audience whether to buy it or not based on whether they like them or not. The quote at the bottom is also another important factor in conveying messages as it tells the audience the genre of the film, but without actually saying what the genre is. ‘From the director of Hitch’ also gives the message that if you liked that film you will like this as well. It also gives the message that maybe the film follows the same route that the ‘Hitch’ did.

  5. Avengers Assemble- There are many different icons present on the cover of this DVD. The main one that probably everyone will notice is the different superheroes at the foreground of the cover. This is an icon because through the different appearances and the distinctive dress/weapons, for example we know which one is the Hulk due to the colour of his skin, the facial expression and his type of dress/ or lack of, and Captain America can be identified through the colours he is wearing and the shield he carries. Another icon is the Empire state building at the very back of the cover, which shows that the film is set in New York. The explosion to the right of the cover is also an icon because the colours and the fire ball, give the audience that impression. The parts of flying glass also help to boost that idea of an explosion. As the genres of this film are fantasy/ superhero/action. This is shown through the use of all the marvel characters at the foreground of the cover. However there are other ways of figuring out the genre such as the use of the colours/lighting shows that the characters are cartoon –like or based on cartoons. All the debris at the foreground of the cover hints at the action/destruction which shows there is a battle/fight that ties in with the action part of the genre. The fact that all the characters are standing together in the middle of New York shows the fantasy side of the genre as, superheroes are imaginary and seeing them in New York is a fantasy. The message of the genre is conveyed very strongly through the image on the cover because ‘MARVEL’ is a very well know company and everyone knows that it is linked with superheroes. The use of the ‘MARVEL’ logo is also a huge selling point. However the actors names are also important in attracting the customers attention, because they are all well-known and would persuade the audience whether to buy it or not.

  6. How easy is it to identify the genres of the films through looking at the covers?

    DVD1
the first DVD is cover is a action/war based film. You can tell that it is a action/war film from the explosions going on in the background of the DVD cover. There is also lots of action shots from the film which include a close up of a countdown which could imply that some sort of explosion is going to occur. The main actor of the film features on the DVD cover so the audience know who is going to be in it. Overall the Dvd cover is successful as you can tell what genre of film it is.

    DVD2
The second DVD cover looks like a Rom-com film. The audience could tell that it is a Rom-com based film based on the colours on the cover. The colours that have been used are pinks which is often associated with love and being all girly. The two main actors from the film are on there so whoever is buying the DVD. Overall the DVD cover is successful as you can tell what genre of film it is.

    DVD3
The third DVD is a crime thriller and I only knew this thanks to Google. The DVD cover has the three main actors of Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Nicholson on the front. The DVD cover design is simple as it uses three different colours for each actors face. The DVD cover also features some of America’s skyline as the New York skyline is visible in one o f the three images. Overall the DVD cover does not give away the genre of the films I had to go and do some extra research to find that out.

    DVD4
The fourth DVD cover is hard to tell what it is. It could either be a action because of the fire in the background or it could be a Rom-com. With some further research I discovered that it was in fact a Rom-com and only serious lovers of Rom-com films would know that. This DVD cover does not follow the rules for Rom-Com DVD cover (DVD2) as there is no pink or the two main characters do not look like they like each other. Overall this DVD cover does not work as it is difficult to make out the genre and characters on the cover looks like they do not want to be there.

    DVD5
The final DVD cover is the most obvious of them all as it is a Sci-fi DVD cover. What makes it a Sci-Fi DVD cover is that all of the characters appear to have special powers. The font that is used on the DVD cover also seems quite Sci-Fi as it appears to be a newly designed font and something different. The main characters all appear on the DVD cover and are therefore the main focus of the DVD front cover. Overall these DVD cover works as it is easy to recognise the genre of the film and the DVD catches your eye.

  7. DVD-1 Hurt Locker: The obvious icons in this DVD cover are the tanks and explosions. Immediately the viewer of the cover will know that the film is war orientated. It is fairly easy to tell that this film is a thriller. Firstly the timer in the bottom right of the cover looks like a bomb timer and is only on one second, so already the potential audience will know that it is going to be close if they survive, because of this people will want to watch the whole film as they have been drawn in and want to see what happens. Will they disarm the bomb? They poster also includes other things to appeal to the potential audience such as mentioning another successful films by the director. It shows that 'The Guardian' rated it 5 star.
DVD-2 The Vow: The icons in this picture are that the man and the women are lovingly looking in to each others eye, showing that it is a romantic film or a Rom-com. The pink border around the outside could be perceived as indicating love, another thing pointing towards a romantic film, because of these it is very easy to guess what genre the film is. To make sure that the film appeals to a target audience which would be women, they have shown a popular actor for women.
DVD-3 The Departed: The main icons of this DVD cover are two very famous actors, Leonardo Di Caprio and Matt Damon, these actors are icons in the thriller film world with Matt Damon being in films such as the Bourne series and Di Caprio in films such as 'Catch me if you can.' This makes it easy to understand that this film is a thriller and these actors will appeal to people to watch the film because of the success of their previous films.
DVD-4 The Bounty Hunter: Similar to 'The Vow' the cover only shows two people, a man and a women. They are both looking into each others eyes showing that it is a love story. The cover shows them handcuffed together so it's obvious that they are going to have comedic problems with that. The biggest appeal of this film is that it has two very popular actors.
DVD-5 Avengers Assemble: This film cover contains a lot of icons, Iron man, Captain America, Hulk, Black Widow, Hawkeye, Thor and Nick Fury. Along with explosions, alien invasions and New York City. It is clearly obvious that this film is a comic book based film from the super hero's, and the Marvell logo above the film title. Marvell is probably the best known comic book maker in the world. This film has a very large appeal. It appeals to people who love super hero/comic movies. It appeals to people who like the actors e.g. Samuel L Jackson, Robert Downey Jr and Scarlett Johansson. It also appeals to people who just like action films, it is evidently an action film from the explosions in the background.

  8. Hurt Locker icons;
    Bold title that’s ‘cracked/damaged.’
Top image shows the main character in a uniform.
The uniform looks similar to a bomb disposal teams.
Army tanks and vehicles behind him, showing him coming away from them.
Dusty smoke from behind him, from what seems like maybe a bomb.
Solders in 4/6 images, with something constantly army related happening.
A timer shows a bomb – supporting the smoke above.
One of the men in the images shows a big explosion behind him showing action.
The potential audience would be mostly men or action lovers, and the 5 star rating at the bottom would most likely make them intrigued, especially after reading the quote above it saying “One of the best war movies ever made”. The smoke and the guy looking through the scope, plus the timer would make the consumer want to watch it as well because they may want to see if this film is as good as it is made out to be.

    The Vow
The border of the film is pink, showing it’s a girly film.
The two main characters are looking into each others eyes and smiling, showing that they are more likely to be a couple, that are in love.
The border also has flowers and butterflies coming from it, making it stand out for girls more.
A vow is involved in marriage, so we can tell this is going to be a love film.
The title is really obvious to what we expect the film to be about.
The potential audience would most likely be teenage girls, and the border helps to make this film stand out to them. The background shows a clear blue sky, this can also symbolise happiness.
    The Departed
The departed cover seems based around the same 3 colours: dark red, white, and an old yellowish colour. These colours make it seem like an old classic type of film.
By splitting the image into 4 basic sections, it spaces the cover out, drawing the consumers immediate attention to what’s in them.
The 3 images at the front seem deep in thought, this shows planning or secrets.
The corners seem worn down, or scratched also showing its age even though it may be a new film.
The characters are wearing suits, or office wear, this could mean businesses and the city in the background of the red square supports this.
The potential audience would be men between the ages of 13-30 who love film about crime and who love the actors by saying “A new American crime classic”.
    The Bounty Hunter
The title, although being plain stands out with the red banner behind it.
The two characters are chained together – could give a sort of cat and mouse chase affect
Dirt on the characters can signify “rough and tumble” affect. Meaning that they’ve had fights, or tried running free.
The background shows a car’s bonnet on fire showing that this could be an action film.
What they’re wearing shows it is set in modern day.
Their facial expressions shows that they aren’t happy being hand-cuffed together, and by the tilt of her head up to him, she could be showing that she isn’t going to back down.
The two main actors’ names are in bold up the top, this can make it stand out to the consumers so that they will buy it knowing that those characters are in it, and want to watch it.
The potential consumer would be probably males or females between the ages of 16-late 20’s who like action and a little bit of awkward romance.

    1. Avengers Assemble
Marvel characters will attract Marvel fans, and teenagers.
The city in the background and explosions shows that it is in modern time, and that it is packed with action.
The title, is in silver and bold, but also the two A’s are assembled into just the one, so that the consumer can read the title, and realise that something is being brought together before looking at the rest of the cover.
Iron Man, The Hulk, Thor, Hawk Eye, Captain America, Black Widow, and Nick Fury are the first things you notice, making this DVD cover bounce at you.
The dark colours in the background also help to make the front images of the characters and title stand out more in the foreground.
The actors names at the top in white again will draw the attention of the actors fans.
Potential consumers would be teenagers between 12-20 allow parts can appeal to those older. It also appeals to anyone who loves Marvel characters, or action with superheroes.

    2. The Hurt Locker - The dvd cover features explosions which signifies that the film is about war. As well as this, there is also a picture of a count down timer, which could show that a bomb is about to go off. The cover also features pictures of the main actor, whose face appears to be covered in dirt and such. The picture also includes army vans. The costumes pictured also shows that there is some element of danger within the film. The film is clearly identifiable as an action movie. There is also a quote of an expert criticism, telling us that it is one of the best war films ever made. Fans of the actor who features on the cover would most likely want to watch this film, as well as fans of other films the actor has appeared in. The film has gained 5 stars, so people would want to go because of their expectations. It also states that the film is from the director of 'Point Break', so fans of this film would probably want to see it. As well as this, from the cover we have many unanswered questions, such as why are they fighting?; who is fighting?; what happens when the timer reaches naught? and who wins the fight?
The Vow - The main colour featuring on the dvd cover is pink, which suggests romance, passion and love. As well as this, the cover also has a boarder which features swirls and flower patterns. The two main protagonists of the movie are seen embracing on the front cover, which is a clear identification of the type of movie that it is. The movie is clearly a romance film. Fans of the two main characters, who are often in romance films, would also want to go and see this film. As well as this, people would want to find out what the vow they made is, and what happens to the two characters in the end.
The Departed - The colour that mainly stands out on this dvd cover is red, which could signify a struggle or blood. As well as this, the characters are pictured in a sepia sort of colour, also suggesting a struggle. From the front cover it is not clear what sort of film that it is. However, from the colours used I think that it is a action film. Fans of the actors, and other films they have appeared in, would probably want to watch the film. The film also received 4 stars in expert criticism, so people would want to go and see it as it is supposedly a good film. People would want to watch this film to find out what the characters are up to.
The Bounty Hunter - The front cover pictures an explosion. As well as this, there is also blood on the one characters shirt. However, the two characters are also looking at each other, which could signify that there is some sort of relationship between them both. Also, the other main character is wearing a black fitted dress. The genre conveyed is a mix between a Rom Com and an Action movie. Fans of the two characters would want to go and see this movie, as well as fans of other films they have appeared in. We are also told that the film is from the director of 'Hitch', so fans of that film may also want to see this film. We also want to know how the characters got into the position that they are in.
Avengers Assemble - The red dots at the bottom of the cover could signify blood. As well as this, there are also explosions. The front cover features many superheroes. The background also has a city-scape, so presumably, the superheroes are seen as protecting it. The film is an action movie. Fans of the actors who appear, and other films they've appeared in, as well as fans of superheroes would probably want to watch this film. People may also watch it to find out what happens to the superheroes, as well as if they win.

  9. DVD cover 1 - for this DVD I am able to tell that it is an action film I can tell this because it has an explosion in the background of the picture at the top. I found it easy to identify the genre of the film. I think that the design of the DVD cover makes the genre of the film self-explanatory and I think it is good because they relied on there actors and the reviews that they were given.

DVD cover 2 - For the second DVD cover I can tell that it is a romance film because the two people are looking lovingly into each others eyes. I found it easy to identify the genre of this film. I think that the design of the DVD cover makes the genre of the film self-explanatory and I think it is good because they relied on there actors and the reviews that they were given.

DVD cover 3 – this film is a crime thriller I can tell this because it has a very intense DVD cover and they look like they are going to rob someone. I found this the hardest to identify the genre of this DVD from the cover. I think that the design of the cover doesn’t make it easy to tell the genre from the DVD cover although the actors in the film are good actors and the reviews are good as well.

DVD cover 4 – This movie is a romantic action comedy I can tell this because there is an explosion in the background and the people are looking lovingly into each others eyes. I also found this cover hard to tell the genre of this film. I think that the design of the cover doesn’t make it easy to tell the genre from the DVD cover although the actors in the film are well known actors and the reviews are good.

DVD cover 5 - This movie is a superhero movie I can tell this because there are superheroes on the cover. I found this one the easy because I have seen the film. I think that the design of the DVD cover makes the genre of the film self-explanatory and I think it is good because they relied on there actors and the reviews that they were given.

  11. DVD 1: The icons that are presented in the hurt locker are army trucks and soldiers which tell the viewer that the film is about a war. It is relatively easy to determine the genre of this film which is a thriller, you can tell this as it is about war, this is backed up by the different action shots such as the man shouting which suggests that he is in combat on the front line.
DVD 2: The icons of this cover would be the two people on the front as it is the first thing they will see so it gives them their first impression on the film. I think that it is quite easy to determine that the genre of this film is romantic as they have two people who look like they are in love on the cover.
DVD 3: On this cover the icons are the 3 characters which suggest that they are the three main characters which may help the viewer decide if they will like the film based on who is starring in it.
DVD 4: The main icons of this DVD cover are again the 2 people of the front but your attention would also be drawn to the explosion at the back. The genre of this film is not as easy to figure out as the others but I feel that it is a romantic comedy as there is a man and woman but as they are handcuffed it might give the idea that something funny has happened during the film.
DVD 5: There are multiple icons of this front cover, them being the 7 superhero’s that are all stood in a destroyed town looking as if they a bracing for another fight. The genre of this film is very easy to determine as there are superhero’s on the front you can tell it is going to be a film based on superhero.

  12. Avengers Assemble – codes and conventions of an action film are shows in this DVD cover through aspects of the background. We can see there is some kind of attack on the city through the explosions coming off the buildings and the flames coming off the aircraft. The use of darkened colours gives the audience the impression its not a light hearted film and may have a darker plot than some other films. The broken ground at the bottom of the cover also implies an attack, action, and shows that the protagonists may struggle in a battle. The main characters shown tells the audience it is a superhero movie as there are a number of well known heroes on the cover. The way they are positioned also shows us that they are ready for or in mid battle. The mis-en-scene shows us that some characters may be more important as the Hulk, Ironman, Thor and Captain America stand out more, and look larger, where as nick fury, the black widow and hawk eye appear smaller and darker letting the audience know they may have more of a supporting role. The text used helps contribute to the feel for an action film as its big and bold and looks metallic, this could link in with Ironman’s armour or even Captain Americas shield. Its places in the centre at the bottom, not distracting from what is happening in the cover, but still draws attention to its self. As Marvel is well know, and its logo appears on the cover it will attract already existing marvel fans, while also appealing to any other actions fans. There are also a number of famous people featured in this film such as Robert Downey Jr, Samuel L Jackson and Scarlett Johansson, these names are shown at the top of the page but all these characters also feature on the cover.

  14. Poster 1 – The Hurt Locker
This poster contains Jeremy Renner who is a big name actor who has played the likes of Hawkeye in the Avengers. You can easily analyse what genre it is by the codes and conventions, it covers:
    • Military – You can tell by their out fits and also by the gun and vehicles.
    • Action – The explosion in the background and then also the timer of a bomb being on 1.
The designers of the poster have used the use of actor’s names to help promote the film to the consumer. People will watch films where there are big name actors, as they won’t agree to do a low budget film that isn’t going to be good, usually. They have also included a review comment to promote the film and a star rating.
    Poster 2 – The Vow <3
This poster contains 2 well know actors with their names at the top, Channing Tatum and Rachel McAdams. You can guess the genre by the use of the colours and also what the actors are doing:
    • The use of the pink helps signify that it is a romantic/chick flick film.
    • The hearts and butterflies’ that have been used as a boarder on the cover. These are showing its a romantic film as well as the age of the intended audience, Teens.
    • The positioning of the characters – They are having a intimate moment.
    Poster 3 – The Departed
This poster contains the names of big actors (Matt Damon, etc.) as well as the stills being focused on them. You can guess parts of the film as well as the genre.
    • There is a shot of New York sky line; this is an insight to where the film is based.
    • The effect that has been used on this poster gives a crime ands action feel to it.
    • You can tell through the actor’s facial expressions and body language that it is more of serious sort of film and is unlikely to be a comedy.

  16. Avengers Assemble – You can tell from this dvd cover that this is an action film. To begin with the background shows explosions and crumbling buildings, this gives the impression that the city is under attack and needs saving. The element of rescue is also backed up by the fact that it is a superhero film and hero’s are renowned for saving the ordinary public. The hero’s are the most prominent feature on the dvd cover, they are easily recognisable by their clothing and weapons. Die hard comic book fans will be able to easily distinguish these characters from their comics and graphic novels. The type that has been used for the title is in keeping with the genre. It stands out as it is very bold and looks like metal, this makes it eye catching. Another thing that attracts people to the poster is the famous ‘Marvel’ logo. The actors names at the top of the cover are also a feature that draws attention, there are a number of very famous actors in the film including Robert Downey jr and Scarlett Johansson, this will attract more people to the film if they like these actors.

  17. DVD1 – The Hurt Locker –This is an action film, you can see this is an action film because the cover has tanks, explosions and characters dress as soldiers in the background this shows that there will be a lot of fights and action scenes. I think this DVD cover is good for showing the genre of the film because it is self-explanatory.
DVD2 – The Vow – It’s easy to see that this film is a chick-flick because of the pink swirly border and overly loved up couple on the cover and because it’s Channing Tatum on the cover it draws a large number of fan girls (and boys) to buy the film, I think its a good cover for a chick-flick because it looks romantic and will easily sell to the target audience.
DVD3 – The Departed – When you look at this cover you can see a shot from New York showing that the film is set in or based around this place. The cover doesn't really explain the genre so I had to Google it. The DvD cover show the names of the main characters in the film, this would make a person want to see the film because they would be persuaded if there favourite character is on the cast. On the cover there is also a rating which could draw more people in because the film has a good rating.
DVD4 – The Bounty Hunter – You can tell this is a rom-com because of the way they look at each other and the fact its showing them handcuffed together like they’re reluctant to be together, I think this could appeal to men and women because its a unisex colour scheme and the explosion in the back ground but the fact it says it was directed by the director of Hitch (another Rom-Com).
DVD5 – Avengers Assemble – This is an action film you can see this because of all the explosions and destruction in background, it also draws in a very large audience of people because it has some of the most famous marvel hero’s on the front drawing in the comic book fans of all ages and the film has a well know actors in it e.g. Robert Downy Jr., Scarlett Johansson and Chris Hemsworth bringing in their fans, I think its an effective cover and will draw in a large audience.

  18. DVD1 – ‘HURT LOCKER’ The front of this DVD suggests that it will be an action film as there are a lot of images that would make the viewer think that. There are quite a few images used on the front of this cover and this gives us more of an opinion ion if we would want to watch that type of film or not. The title is right in the middle of the cover. I think that it is easy to identify the genres of the film because of the amount of images that are used. Also because of the colours and the back grounds and effects used, like the explosion in the background of the larger image which is very prominent. At the bottom of the cover they have used a comment made by someone which would promote the film, also because of the five starts at the bottom of it. There are actor’s names at the top of the cover which would attract viewers because they may like the actors that are used in the film. They have also written that the director has directed a well known film which could attract more viewers.
DVD2- ‘THE VOW’ The DVD cover straight away give us the impression that it will be a romantic film because of the way that they are posed and the font and colours used. The cover is quite plain and doesn’t really give much away about the film and what might happen. I think it’s a bit boring and if I saw this I would not be attracted to watch it. They have used the names of the two actors and this might make people want to watch that film because they may like those actors. Also from the film cover tells us that the story is inspired by true events.

DVD3- ‘DEPARTED’ on the front cover of this DVD you can see three of the characters; it doesn’t really give much away about the film. The actors are three well known actors so this contributes to the advertisement of the film itself. From looking at the front cover it is hard to identify the genre of the film. Each of the characters all has the same expression on their faces. It has a five star rating and a comment underneath about the success of the film. There are four actors names in the top corner section on the cover, this will also attract more viewers because they might be interested in watching the film because of the actors that are featured in it.

DVD4- ‘THE BOUNTY HUNTER’ from looking at the front cover we can see that it might be a comedy and also a romance because Jenifer Aniston is acting in it and she is a well known comedy actress. The name of the film stands out and also the actors names at the top of the cover. Also it tells us another film that the director has directed and that means that people that may have watched the other film and enjoyed it may want to watch that film. There is a quote at the bottom of the cover that makes the film sound good.
DVD5 – ‘AVENGERS ASSEMBLE’ This DVD cover is very busy and there is a lot to take in from it. You can tell that it will be an action film because of the background and the actor’s positions. All of the actors names are featured at the top of the cover and this will attract viewers. The name of the film is large and stands out because of the dark colours in the background. There is no quote or star rating for this film.

  19. DVD 1- The film poster for ‘The Hurt Locker’ features many icons that suggest it is an action film. One of these is the content of the pictures; they include lots of action shots, explosions and the cluttered layout. Another signifier is the promotion quote at the bottom which tells you that the film is “one of the best war movies ever made”. The text used in the title also makes it very easy to distinguish what genre the film is. By making the title ragged and old looking it supports the theme of war. I feel that the genre of this film is important as most people do decide to watch a film depending on whether they think that they will enjoy it, however with a film like this I feel that the stars of the film also help to sell the film.

DVD 2- The characters presented on the film poster for ‘The Vow’ really exaggerates the film’s genre- romance. Their romantic pose and that it is a man and woman helps the viewer in knowing what to expect from the film. By using the colour pink as a border also hints to the genre and in using little “flicks” it increases the “girly” mood of the poster. ‘The Vow’ also reveals what the story may be about; it denotes marriage, love and romance. It is also stated on the poster that the film was “inspired by true events” which tells the viewer it could be a true story. All of the signifiers in this poster make it easy for someone to be aware of the genre of the story and similarly help to sell the film. Nevertheless, likewise to ‘The Hurt Locker’ I feel that by having well known stars in the film it makes the process of appealing to audiences much easier.

DVD 3- ‘The Departed’ poster displays certain icons which indicate to the viewer what genre the film is such as the use of red, which as stated about denotes danger and war. An example of this is again the use of a promotional quote which tells us that the film is “a new American crime classic”- using quotes is a very common and successful way of not only making your film appear a must see but also hinting to what the genre/plot is. By displaying all three main characters in separate boxes it introduces us to them so we are aware they are important in the film and somehow come together. The ‘battered’ and faded colour effect on the poster helps the reader to familiarise and link up that this is based on a period of time which has passed, by using pictures of the characters in their wartime military outfits it enables the viewer to realise this even better, making it easy to establish the genre of the film- although this may confuse a viewer as they may expect a war film, not so much crime. This DVD cover has attracted potential customers by featuring well known actors in the film and making sure that their names are a big part of the poster. As well as the actors, the director seems to play a huge role in the film and is well known, therefore is featured on the poster as “legendary”. I would say that this is used more than selling the film because of its genre.

  20. DVD 4- The characters featured for ‘The Bounty Hunter’ denotes a very complex relationship. Although they seem to be forced together (through handcuffs) they still appear to be gazing longingly into each others eyes. From this the viewer can assume that there is some kind of confusing love story between the two of them. However again, with the use of a quote telling us that the film is “hilarious” we know immediately that the film must be a comedy, and a possible light rom-com. The fact that they are in handcuffs with a car that is alight in the background does suggest that the pair are in trouble with the police. The yellow, white and red in the title stand out and draw the viewer’s attention here. The lighting for the poster is also quite light which suggests that although you may see them in trouble it is light and not the basis of the plot. I feel that to identify the genre of the plot through the poster here would be very difficult if it weren’t for the promotional quote at the bottom. I feel that it is again the stars of the movie which appeal to potential customers as both are very well known and apart from them in the poster, not a lot is happening.

DVD 5- ‘Avengers Assemble’ denotes sci-fi and action from its poster. The use of blue and black colours gives a superficial and unnatural lighting which suggest that the people are literally ‘out of this world’. By featuring all of the characters on the poster in action also shows how upbeat the film is and again supports that the film is sci-fi. The title is displayed heavily in the poster also, I feel that this may be because it is founded by Marvel which is already well known and create sci-fi animations- it is clear that their target audience is the followers of Marvel and the characters. Looking at the background, you can see that a city is being attacked, this presents the characters as heroes as it appears that they are fighting back. Although this gives away part of the plot I feel that it is necessary to do so here as without this the potential customers would have no indication of what the film may be about. I feel that the poster is trying to attract its customers through this and the stars that are in the film as their names are presented right at the top of the poster.

  21. DVD 1 - From first glance at this DVD cover the genre for this movie is action. You can tell this is an action/army film by the explosions in the background, the soldiers in the different sections and the military vehicles and equipment. All of these different features on the DVD cover make it easy to know what genre the film is. At the bottom of the DVD cover there is a five star rating from critics, this movie had five stars- this is very important and the most important consumer message along with the genre as it shows that critics thought it was a very good film.
DVD 2 – This is a very simple DVD cover which only shows one thing, two people holding each other and being very close. This gives a good impression that the genre for this film would be a chick flick or romance. The use of the pink font is an aim for the target audience which would be women. The main consumer messages for this DVD cover would the main characters which are a large size and the words “inspired by true events” – this is very important as the love story was based on something true, not just the fantasy love film that girls want.
DVD 3- The genre for this film is very hard to tell from the DVD cover, it is split into four sections and three of those are taken up by the faces of the main actors and the title of the movie in the top corner. This DVD cover isn’t very appealing, but it makes up by showing the actors faces. This is important because it means these actors are good. However across the bottom of the cover it explains that this is a crime investigation film.
DVD 4- The genre for this film I think would be a Rom Com because it has a couple on the front and the one is chained to the other and they both have serious faces. The main feature to this DVD cover would be the actors; they are both well known and tend to be in good films. The actors and the director are the main factors that encourage people to buy this film. They also use the line “from producers of Hitch” this is possibly because Hitch was a successful film and would attract more of an audience.
DVD 5- the genre for this film is action/ comic it is easily recognised from looking at the DVD cover. The main features to this movie are the superheroes this is because they’ve all had there separate films and have collaborated together to make this one. You can tell its an action movie because all the heroes are together ready to defend themselves and there are explosions on the buildings in the background. The main consumer message is the name of the movie which is well recognised in the comic book franchise and the actors who have also had separate films and play the same roles in this film.
